Who do you think this song is about?

Who is this that wipes the tears from my eyes?
Just one glimpse of you steals my heart away
You’re the lover of my soul
Draw me into you, draw me into you

We will run, we will fly
We will be together
We will laugh, we will cry
We will be together

Sometimes, it’s really, really hard to keep a straight face when playing in the band at church.

  1. Oh, for the days when educated theologians will write worship music again…

Whoever wrote that should be kicked in the shins.

Conversation between Naomi and I (paraphrased):

Her: You do know that there’ll only be an organist at our wedding, right?
Me: So… no modern worship music?
    Her: No.
Me: YES YES YES YES WOO YAY YES.

We’re having Wesley at our wedding. I am quite adamant about this.

Maybe you should introduce ‘This is the one’ by the Stone Roses (with a couple of lyrical modifications of ‘she’ to ‘he’ or ‘you’) to your church band.

It’s got all the elements – a slightly mushy/ambiguous opening verse then a repeated over and over again phrase that starts off quietly then gets louder and more emotional. And it’s got kind-of tag bits in the middle to boot!

OK, I couldn’t leave it at that.

    I am consumed by fire
    You are my one desire
From the plans that you have made
You have me on a promise
    Immerse me in your splendour
All the plans that you have made

    This is the one
    This is the one
    This is the one
    This is the one
    This is the one
    I’ve waited for

    You are the one
    You are the one
    You are the one
    You are the one
    You are the one
    I’ve waited for

    etc

I’d like to leave the old ways
All the months and old days
Look to heaven as my home
If only I could now be
Complete as you now see me
Light the fire and bring me home

    This is the one
    This is the one
    This is the one
    This is the one
    This is the one
    I’ve waited for

    You are the one
    You are the one
    You are the one
    You are the one
    You are the one
    I’ve waited for

I’ve been in bands were we had to sing songs like that. I refused to play.

At our church we sing lots of songs by EMU, an Australian group. Theologically they may not be to your tastes, but they’re certainly not short on content 🙂
