Slides

Just added a bunch of new pictures to the gallery. These were again taken over Christmas and New Year in Norfolk. It’s my first real attempt to play with slide film and it has to be said, I’m very impressed with the results – the scans don’t really do the originals justice, but they’re still pretty good. I particularly like this one, and the backlit plants from my parent’s garden worked really well, too.

(in a few places, the jpeg compression hasn’t been terribly kind to the thumbnails – in all cases, the un-shrunk version [click on the thumbnail, then click on the enlarged image to get the original image] will be better quality)

What slide film are you using? Personally I like Velvia 50. Not tried the new 100, but I understand it’s not as saturated as 50, and that’s why I like 50. Mind you, I’m using digital at the moment myself. What are you using to scan the slides?

The one of the beach huts is great!

Those are Velvia 50. I’ve got a roll of Sensia 100F here waiting to be scanned, too, which has a few good pics on it, but they were mostly ‘action’ shots, and quite a lot of them ended up blurred, even at f/1.8. I’ve got a cheap (ie, 100quid) 1800 dpi slide scanner from Jessops which I use for scanning. Most of the pictures needed the levels adjusting and the colours rebalancing in Photoshop to get them to look anything like the original slides, but it’s cheaper than getting Peak to stick high quality scans on a CD for me and considerably better quality than scanning prints.

Yeah, that’s the problem with slow film, you can’t do action shots! And of course you lose DoF when you open the lens up.
