Mad World. Christmas Number 1. Radio execs – are you paying attention here? Hmmm? The most significant chart placing of the year has gone to a virtually unknown American artist who recorded a cover of a 20-year old song in his basement for the soundtrack of a (relatively) obscure indie-sci-fi-comic-book film. More of this sort of thing, please.
Great song, but I can’t help but wonder how well it would have done if the BBC hadn’t given it so much airplay on Radios 1 and 2
Does that really matter, though? It’s a great song – we shouldn’t complain that it’s been getting loads of airplay – we should probably, in fact, be applauding the fact, and hope that it opens the way for more ‘less mainstream’ stuff on the bigger stations.
I’m not saying it’s a bad thing… just wondering.
What Chris said.
Just as a point, XFM was playing both this and The Darkness for ages before BBC got hold of it.
